Chicago Edition Chicago Dateline TV's Week: It’s happy anniversary tid¬ ings for at least two WGN-TV shows this first week of 1954. On Jan. 4, Jim Moran commemorated a full year of showing only first run feature films on Channel 9’s Courtesy Theater (10 PM, Sundays). Hell mark the event this Sunday (Jan. 10) by showing Whistle Stop, starring whistle-bait Ava Gard¬ ner and that er.st- while movie gigolo George Raft. Also in line for kudos is WGN-TV’s A to Z of Cookery, whose star chefs, Alida Drake and John Zenker, Moran chalked up a full year of kitchen capers this week. Add Bill Anson, Chicago’s early How¬ ard Miller, to the congratulations list. Former round-the-clock radio disk jockey, impressionist, actor and comic has returned to his Windy-City stamp¬ ing grounds from Hollywood. He’s taken over the sales-hawking job on WBKB’s film show, Stars on Parade (Sat. 10 PM). Speaking of Howard Miller, the popu¬ lar deejay has two reasons to celebrate the New Year. No. 1: His marriage to songstress June Valli. No. 2: A network debut of his midnight WNBQ records and relaxation opus Friday nights. So far, New York, Cleveland and Wash¬ ington have added him to their sched¬ ules with more NBC stations lining up steadily, according to WNBQ reports. New TV applicant, Oak Park’s WOPA-TV, is proposing a non-network type of television for education and entertainment on a local basis. Station’s prexy, Egmont Sonderling, claims Windy City-ites are clamoring for such TV fare. WOPA-TV plans to operate on UHF Channel 44, if the FCC approves. Shows in the Works: Could WMAQ’s Northerners, popular radio choral group, be eyeing TV? After 23 years of a songs- only format, the choristers are chang¬ ing their format to one suspiciously suitable for television. Starting Jan. 18, they’ll be adding well-known TV and movie stars in a series of dramatic read¬ ings. Lineup includes such notables as Charles Laughton and Charlton Heston. channels listed in program section CHICAGO, ILL. 0 WBBM-TV (CBS) 410 N. Michigan Ave. 0 WBKB (ABC) 20 N.
