T here were raised eyebrows along puppet row when the Win- chell-Mahoney show changed its name to the Paul Winchell Show. Did this mean that Jerry Mahoney would be out of a job? It turns out that Paul is doing some long-range thinking. “A ventriloquist usually becomes subordinated to his dummy,” Paul explains. “I had to find some way to develop two distinct peo¬ ple—Jerry and me.” Paul decided that the way to estab¬ lish his own personality apart from his ventriloquism was to become an actor. And not just an ordinary actor. He wants to become a great actor. But what about Mahoney? Where does he fit in? “What I’ve done,” an¬ swers Paul, “is to establish two dif¬ ferent entities. Jerry does a sketch with me seemingly nowhere around. We do the commercials alternately.
