Gisele MacKenzie; 'one-fifth' Scotch. T he Hit Parade, a longtime advo¬ cate of the two-platoon system where girl singers are concerned, has come up with a new companion for Dorothy Collins, this time a lusty contralto named Gisele MacKenzie. It is reliably reported that the bosses are happy with her work, so Gisele can be expected to escape the fate of last year’s June Valli and the previous year’s Eileen Wilson, both of whom found themselves ex-Hit Paraders after their respective sea¬ sons. Things almost went haywire for her as soon as she got her job. Gisele owns a couple of dachshunds and parked them in her dressing room the night of her first show. Sharing the room is Dorothy Collins and, after the show, Gisele returned to find one of the rascals had been at work, chewing up a new $30 pair of Doro¬ thy’s shoes. Dorothy was very kind about it. However the thought of the incident still makes Gisele wince. Pint Size Pianist Gisele, out of Winnepeg, Canada, refers to her ancestry as four-fifths French and a fifth Scotch. She has been in the music business since she was three and her mother found her pecking ayfay at a piano. Her father, a physician with hopes that one of his children would become a violinist, turned her loose on that instrument. Her violin career went well until her fourth year in Toronto’s Royal Conservatory of Music when she met Bob Shuttleworth, a Navy band¬ leader, who persuaded her to sing at a naval barracks and, later, as a civilian, hired her for his orchestra. The next step was stardom on Canadian and U. S. radio, and then to the Hit Parade. Gisele has also made nice coin via singing engagements at some of the Nation’s top night clubs. This work has been circumscribed recently by her chores on the Hit Parade, but since she rehearses only three days for the show, she will soon return to the night club campaigns. 22
