Your color set is still two to three years off. You’ll be able to see demonstration models in your dealer’s showroom within a few months. You’ll be hear¬ ing that all of a certain network’s shows will be televised in color at least once in 1954. You’ll read items about filmed programs being shot in color as well as black and white. But as for sitting down in your own living room and looking at exciting color television on a 21-inch tube set you bought for $500-$600 — that day won’t come until at least 1956. You say you want the facts? The National Appliance and Radio-TV Dealers Association met in Chicago recently. These are the gentlemen who must know exactly what’s ahead so that they can buy goods to sell you. They were curious as to whether they should buy black and white sets for you or wait for color receivers that will bring a new dimension, a new reality to TV. They’re buying black and white. The NARDA men saw impressive color demonstrations on 11V 2 -inch picture tubes. They heard that while a few sets would be turned out with those tubes, the manufacturers were developing much larger ones. They heard that at least two different kinds of large color picture tubes are under development, that neither of these has reached the production stage. They heard that two of the networks haven’t even started real color plan¬ ning. If the businessmen Jn NARDA are convinced that despite all the advance publicity, color will come by evolu¬ tion instead of revolution, then we might as well take our cues from them, settle down with our black and white sets, and enjoy television now.
