He was different from most piano players in that he didn’t allow the customers to buy him a snort now and again and didn’t sit there with a cigaret dangling from his lip like he was Hoagy Carmichael cooking up “Stardust.” He just played, smiling dreamily and occasionally winking in a pure-friendship sort of way at any pretty girl who happened to be paying attention.
