BIL says CBS assured them only a week before that their puppet act was set solidly as part of the show. Then PAAR wrapped up his new con¬ tract and two days later the BAIRDS got the ax. They're signed for four MAX LIEBMAN's "spectaculars," with options for 10 more, and also hope to revive their Whistling W izard kid show. •K- ^ * JERRY LEWIS having completely recovered from his re¬ cent Illness, he and DEAN MARTIN make their first TV appearance this season Sunday, Dec. 19, on Comedy Hour . . . They're slated for four more Comedy Hours later. * * * - It's definite now- for JACKIE GLEASON to star in "The Show-off," as the February offering on Best of Broadway . HUMPHREY BOGART in "The Petrified Forest," originally scheduled for that date, has been postponed and may be canceled entirely. * * * Now that PAUL WINCHELL and JERRY MAHONEY are back on NBC Saturday mornings, the network is talking of star¬ ring them in a special "Pinocchlo" show for Christmas . . . And speaking of Christmas, Studio One will stage a special show on Monday, Dec. 20 — an original MICHAEL DINE comedy, "Two Little Minks." * * * Once STEVE ALLEN makes certain of the format on his Tonight show, he plans to originate the program from various cities, with the entire cast traveling as a unit. ARLENE FRANCIS and her Home show have already toured in this fashion . . . JAMES HILTON is Interested in doing a TV show based on his many short stories. He would be program host. * * * Writer GORE VIDAL has become the official adapter of WILLIAM FAULKNER short stories for TV. His third FAULKNER adaptation for CBS' Danger will be coming up soon . . . Comedienne PAT CARROLL, ex-Red Buttons and Saturday Night Review , appearing several times on The Mickey Kooney Show as a gum-chewing phone operator"^ One of NBC's top program executives went to see MAE WEST'S new night-club act at New York's Latin Quarter recently, to determine whether the famed performer would be suitable for TV. laughed himself silly but reported back that MISS WEST Just isn't doing "family-type material." One Eye Closed," a new comedy opening on Broadway this week, has an almost all-TV cast. Stars TOM HEL- MORE, CONSTANCE FORD and JOHN BARAGREY, all TV drama regulars.
