3S we see it It must be a tough job to come up with a weekly survey such as the one Dr. George Gallup sells to newspapers. Besides the expense of maintaining pollsters throughout the country, Dr. Gallup must find questions of cur¬ rent interest, and phrase the ques¬ tions to the public in as fair a manner as possible. He doesn’t always suc¬ ceed in the last. Recently he did a survey concerning the effect on youngsters of comic books and of television and radio crime programs only. One question asked by the Gallupers was: “Do you think any of the blame for teen-age crime can be placed on the mystery and crime programs on TV and radio?” Seventy percent of those polled said, “Yes.” Twenty-four percent said, “No.” Only six percent had no opinion. !Vow we’d like to ask Dr. Gallup some questions: 1. Do you think any of the blame for teen-age crime can be placed on the increase in the number of broken homes in the U.S.? 2. Do you think any of the blame for teen-age crime can be placed on parents who fail to discipline their children? 3. Do you think any of the blame for teen-age crime can be placed on slum conditions in cities, lack of play¬ grounds, lack of adequate numbers of policemen? 4. Do you think any of the blame for teen-age crime can be placed on overcrowded schools, and overworked and underpaid teachers? 5. In the light of the above four questions. Doctor, was it fair to single out radio and TV as contributing fac¬ tors to juvenile delinquency, with¬ out even mentioning the really im¬ portant causes of teen-age crime? Your question was loaded.
