as we see it Our British cousins are about to dunk their toes into the cold facts of com¬ mercial television, and already they’re getting goose bumps. Thus far, the viewers over there have had a choice between watching the British Broad¬ casting Corporation channel and turn¬ ing off their sets. Come next Septem¬ ber, another channel—a commercial one—will be airing programs, too. It’s a shattering prospect for our good friends. A Spanish Armada they could deal with. Napoleon’s threats they could laugh off. German bombs, buzz- bombs and rockets they could stand. But the prospect of lots of television has them shuddering. It’s been said that if the British can’t settle a problem by forming a queue, they set up a rationing system. Their new TV ration rules—designed to pre¬ vent “the nation’s home life” from be¬ ing upset, go like this: 1. Television stations may be on the air a total of seven hours on weekdays. 2. No breakfast time programs. 3. A shutdown Sunday nights during church service time. 4. No TV programs between 6 and 7 P.M.,the children’s bedtime. 5. No TV before 9 A.M. or after 11 P.M. Imagine! No Dave Garroways, Jack Paars or Steve Allens. No late late late shows with their nostalgic old old old movies and loud loud loud pitchmen demonstrating aluminium (that’s how they spell it over there) storm windows. It’s a pity that the British, so valiant s —, in time of war, can’t face up to some of the challenging vagaries of peace¬ time. Still, there will always be an England—in bed early.
