as we see it Well, we knew it was too good to last. The politicians on television were looking downright pretty in their make-up, and their words flowed like smooth, sylvan streams, so well had they mastered the use of prompters. CONTENTS WEEK OF MAY 28 - JUNE 3 Local Program Guide Opens Opposite Page 12 TELETYPES New York . 3 Hollywood .23 But, like all good things, it must end. At least it will end if a bill now be¬ fore the U. S. Senate passes. The measure would stop the secret use of make-up and prompting devices. A politician could still use those aids, but he’d have to tell his audience about them. Like this, maybe: “Ladies and gentlemen. I’m using Max Factor Pancake No. 5 on my jowls to cover my beard and No. 3 on my normally shiny nose. I have the beginning of a bald spot, which is covered tonight with brown eyebrow pencil. I didn’t have time to memorize my speech, so there’s a fellow in front of me holding up big cards with words printed on them. Now then, from the rock-bound etc. . . .” If the candidate failed to confess his beauty secrets, there would be a penalty—against the station on which he appeared. The idea behind this seems to be to protect the public from a fellow who looked like, say, Mr. Peepers, making himself up to look like Davy Crockett and bilking viewers into voting for him. The prompting device clause would save us from a candidate with the brains of Howdy Doody who might spiel off a speech just as if he were as smart as Professor McNulty. Where but in America, as the saying goes, could such an earth-shaking issue come before a nation’s highest legislative body? Certainly the Sena¬ tors need direction on this bill.
