Groucho Threatens Drastic Step; Lots More Co. For Lassie & Co. HOLLYWOOD . . . The private affairs of Groucho Marx have been “exposed” again in one of those “inside stuff” magazines. This prompted the NBC quiz-master to write the magazine a stinging letter: “If you don’t stop this sort of thing, I’ll be forced to cartel my subscription.” . . . The Lassie cast will be enlarged during the com¬ ing season. New additions: a baby girl, a basset hound and a horse. ■ Gail Davis, TV’s An¬ nie Oakley, just paid $550 for a Scottish cashmere cowgirl outfit . . . George Burns, straight-faced, tells me he’ll be smoking his one-millionth cigar when The Burns and Allen Show starts a new series next month. ■ Bob Cummings just packed up his whole fam¬ ily and took a fast trip to Hawaii when the film actors’ strike prevented shooting on his TV series. “Naturally,” he moans, “the minute we arrived, put on swimming suits and headed for the beach, I was handed a telegram saying the strike was settled.” ■ Eddie Fisher will do three TV shows from Hollywood, but not until January . . . Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy made a pilot film at the NBC studios here. And just two years ago Charlie swore he and Bergen would never do TV . . . Jim Backus, after playing Joan Davis’ husband for three years on TV, has bought a house right across the street from her in Bel Air ... I asked the master of suspense, Al¬ fred Hitchcock, how he felt about going into TV and he replied, “Just like Shakespeare—TV or not TV, that is the question.” Ouch. ■ Gordon Douglas, who directed many of the “Our Gang” comedies now be¬ ing seen on TV, can’t con¬ vince his little daughter that Spanky McFarland is a grown man now. She still sends him letters and wants to meet him . . . Don De Fore, who chang¬ ed his mind about leaving the Ozzie and Harriet cast when his salary was upped, says he’s making so much money that when he sent his check to the bank, they sent it back marked: “Insufiicient funds. Us, not you.” Gait Davis: Scotch cowgirl. ■ Milton Berle and Jerry Lewis were playing golf and every time Jerry said something funny, Milton said, “I was going to say that.” Finally, on the 18th hole, Jerry made a really funny joke, and when Milton again said, “I was going to say that,” Jerry replied, “Don’t worry. You will.” ■ Four guards accompanied Judy Garland and a color TV camera to the studio where she made tests for her TV debut on Sept. 24. The camera is valued at $67,000. Judy looked at it and said, “Gee, it’s real cute. Can I take it and photograph my baby?” 22
