T he traditional sweater, the all- time love and classic of women’s dress, returns to the fashion scene this year as news. Sweaters go everywhere from supermarkets to cocktail partied and, happily, seem at home in all places. Roxanne, hostess of Beat the Clock, says she would rather put money into a good sweater than an expensive dress, because, “Sweaters last longer, never go out of style and they always are in good taste.” Roxanne models a coral wool sweater with navy checkerboard trim. The loose-fitting dolman sleeves are in the new three-quarter length and have turn-back cuffs. Her favorites also include a wool cardigan in pastel pink, and an Orion cardigan with felt applique, patterned into petals and accented with pearls. She suggests that a set of Peter Pan collars will do wonders for any sweater collection. A collar covered with felt flowers or beading can be snapped onto a cardigan to transform it into an evening jacket. Pearl or rhinestone buttons add another inter¬ esting touch to the cardigan. For an evening out, she often wears a pull¬ over with ball fringe and a black vel¬ vet cummerbund. For the budget-minded woman, Roxanne considers the new sweater look a dream. With an assortment of sweaters, a few basic skirts and a little originality, she can turn these into a full fall wardrobe. (Sweater by Rosanna Knitwear) 13
