as we see it Week of February 5-11 LOCAL PROGRAM GUIDE Our cover personality this week, Ed¬ ward R. Murrow, has been termed tel¬ evision’s “most controversial” figure. He has also been labeled “champion of free speech,” “misguided liberal” and several other things—some com¬ plimentary, some not. We are not concerned with labels, which are all too easy to coin but impossible to define to more than one person’s satisfaction. We are, however, concerned with the level of televi¬ sion programing. Whenever television deals with sub¬ ject matter slightly more involved than custard pie-throwing, comedy- drama or straight news reporting, there is a tendency to sugar-coat, to find ways of presenting material in two-syllable words, amply illustrated. One gains the impression from such programs that the producer said to himself: “I understand this stuff, but the average viewer is much less in¬ telligent than I am. So if I want to keep my audience at all, I’d better reduce it to kindergarten level.” Ed Murrow seems to operate on a different premise. His two TV offer¬ ings, See It Now and Person to Per¬ son, give the viewer credit for having some brains of his own. Murrow talks to his audience, not down to it. He does not apologize for presenting, say, Sen. Margaret Chase Smith to discuss Russian politics and living conditions. He did not attempt to translate into simple concepts Dr. J. Robert Op- penheimer’s rather scholarly Atomic Age concept. Murrow’s programs don’t do the thinking for the audience— they make the audience think. For respecting his viewers; for bring¬ ing them informative shows, Ed Mur¬ row deserves his high place among the important figures in television.
