The millenium has arrived. Some¬ one actually has said something fa¬ vorable—in public—about television. This unusual—yea, nigh onto un¬ precedented-event came during a Senate subcommittee hearing on ju¬ venile delinquency. A citizens fact¬ finding committee in Boston spent several weeks studying the effects of various information media on the problem, and the chairman, one Fred¬ erick B. Taylor, testified as to what the committee had learned. “The people responsible . . . have been motivated basically in the best interest of that which is good in and for our community,” Taylor said. His conclusion: television helps curb ju¬ venile delinquency.- TV, to be sure, had to share credit with newspapers, radio, magazines, books, comic books and motion pic¬ tures, which also were commended for their efforts to combat teen-age crime. But a start has been made. For the first time, television hasn’t been blamed for starting crime waves. Every pseudo-expert in the country has pointed to TV’s whodunits as a cause of juvenile delinquency, despite the fact that the shows invariably are based on “crime does not pay” themes. We agree with some critics that there are too many violent whodunits, that there should be more change of pace in programming. But TV programs don’t breed criminals any more than books on Benedict Arnold make kids want to become traitors. And it’s about time someone out¬ side the television industry stood up and debunked the accusations made against the medium. A deep bow of gratitude, then, to Mr. Taylor and his citizens committee for speaking up in public and having a kind word to say for television. Let’s hope he starts a whole new trend.
