Ira Uhr is casting director for Ford Theater, a drama show with an un¬ usually high beauty quotient, as shown here. That makes Uhr vice-president- in-charge-of-pretty-girls. A dream assignment? Nope. “With me,” says Uhr wearily, “it is strictly a job. I’ve been at it for almost 20 years now. It’s also a job with the girls. Ninety-five percent are hard¬ working professionals. That starry- eyed business just doesn’t apply.” Uhr is methodical. He keeps a file of about every actress in town, so many thousands that he has lost count. In TV alone, in less than a year, he has hired more than 200. “Blondes,” he yawns, “run about even with brunettes.” Despite his eye for beauty, Uhr insists: “Acting ability comes first. The looks you can almost take for granted.” 17
