They must be kept informed. This is not someone else’s job. It is yours.” Sylvester L. (Pat) Weaver, the speaker, was referring to his “en¬ lightenment” project, a deliberate ef¬ fort to “employ informational, in¬ structional, cultural and inspirational material without vitiating the enter¬ tainment power of the telecasts.” Thus it is Weaver’s theory that if Jascha Heifetz, as an example, were to appear on the Howdy Doody show to explain the violin to youngsters, the kids would enjoy Heifetz and learn something at the same time. Actually, whether you know it or not, television has been shoving large doses of what used to be called “long¬ hair stuff” right at you. This is delib¬ erate, and it is the reason why tele¬ vision will not fall into the disc jockey-soap opera-comedy rut that threatens radio. IVBC has no monopoly on this spoon¬ fed culture thesis. Ed Sullivan at CBS pops regularly from opera to classical ballet to serious drama. Disney at ABC certainly has done a magnificent job of combining information with entertainment. And there are many, many other examples. There is a place in television for the purely informative show such as Omnihus, Meet the Press, the opera and special Shakespearean produc¬ tions, and others admittedly aimed at those who enjoy serious fare. But there are millions of us who prefer a little opera, a little Shakespeare, a little information, at a time. We like the trend and the thinking behind it.
