George Antrobus is John Doe or George Spelvin or you...The Antrobuses have survived fire, flood, pestilence, the seven-year-locusts, the ice age, the black pox and the double feature and as many de¬ pressions .. . They have survived a thousand ca¬ lamities by the skin of their teeth. Here is a tribute to their indestructibility.” The play is a kind of comic parable of human history. Its form is unorthodox—actors address asides to the audience, scenery sometimes shifts for itself, episodes range in subject matter from Cain and Abel to Atlantic City conventions. Mankind is satirized as well as praised. W'hen the show had its Broadway premiere in 1942, Fredric March played the Antrobus role; his wife, Florence Eldridge', played Mrs. Antrobus; Tallulah Bankhead was Sabina; and Florence Reed created the role of the Fortune Teller, which she repeats tonight. Tonight's two-hour production was originally prepared by the American National Theater and Academy as part of the Salute to France program. After its return from Paris, the show Mary Martin and Helen Hayes. played Washington, Chicago and New York. For the occasion, George Abbott returned to acting after 21 years as a playwright and sensationally successful producer-director of comedies.
