You begin by watching Warner Broth ~ ers Presents for' an exciting film drama, and it isn’t half over before you’re wondering whether Berle (or Martha Raye or Bob Hope) might not be starting a good show, or whether you really shouldn’t be tuning to Navy Log, the fine new CBS series. If you’re a Berle fancier, half-way through his show you’re wondering what Wyatt Earp’s up to, and just how funny Phil Silvers is going to be at the same time. And so it goes the rest of the evening—up to The $64,000 Question, when there seems to be no doubt in anyone’s mind where to tune. We don’t think there’s room for com¬ plaint about this Year of Plenty on TV. Networks are outdoing themselves —and if there are a number of good programs on at the same hour, we’d rather miss a few than have the net¬ works give up their competitive battle for attention. The hotter the compe¬ tition, the better for the audience. Well, we finally yielded to that im¬ pulse and pointed out to our friend that with TV GUIDE’S program de¬ tails at hand, he’d know pretty well, in advance, which shows he’d enjoy; and when something extra-special was in the offing, TV GUIDE would tell. We sold him, all right; but it seems he and his family still didn’t quite agree on shows. Poor fellow wound up buying a second television set!
