charge of the show, you’d actually have thought that they thought they had actually wrought a minor mir¬ acle. I heard one of the minor ex¬ ecutives say: “Well, this’ll give them something to shoot at.” To which a friend of mine cracked (he shall be nameless for obvious reasons since he works for the network) : “It cer¬ tainly will give them something to shoot at—the producers.” What price guest stars? Jo Staf¬ ford is riding high, wide and hand¬ some in the surveys —and rightly so— and never uses them —guest stars, that is . . . Donald O’Con¬ nor’s Texaco sessions keep on getting brighter and bright¬ er. Or is it that I can’t see beyond my nose when O’Connor’s on the screen because I’m mad about the boy as an entertainer ... I wonder how much longer The U.S. Steel Hour will be able to hold on to its director, Alex Segal. The Carnegie Tech Drama School alumnus has been getting- some fabulous offers from the movies; as a matter of fact, I’m only surprised that Hollywood didn’t come after him long ago. I rather think the Heinz people have latched on to a winner in Buster Crabbe’s Captain Gallant of the Foreign Legion. The kids will go for it in a big way even if the adults don’t, and the small fry eat a lot of soup, baked beans, ketchup, etc. . . . Understand the Wall Street Journal has taken a dim view of the Kraft Theater’s prize show, “Pat¬ terns.” They don’t like the picture it gives of big business. Could be but I’m inclined to suspect a little more touchiness than seems neces¬ sary . . . Pearl Bailey and her tap¬ dancing brother, Bill, were slightly terrific on Toast of the Town. En¬ core, encore . . . “The Women” on TV got such a good reaction that Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer is thinking about remaking it as a picture with Lana Turner, Grace Kelly, Elizabeth Taylor and Ava Gardner. The orig¬ inal movie had Joan Crawford, Norma Shearer, Rosalind Russell and Paulette Goddard. Apparently The Comedy Hour just won’t take no for an answer. I was commenting only a short time ago on how little luck they had had on a couple of location shows—first from the Hollywood Bowl and later from the new Fontainebleu Hotel in Miami—and exactly the same thing happened from the Mardi Gras in New Orleans. It was another jumble, perhaps a little less so than the Hollywood and Miami turkeys but a jumble just the same. Attention . . .
