Anthony Asquith was born in 1902 and is the youngest son of the late Earl of Oxford, Prime Minister of England before and during part of the war. Won a scholarship at Winchester College in 1916, and repeated the Performance at Balliol in 1920. In 1925 he went to the United States and spent three months in Hollywood studying fihn technique. A year later he joined British Instructional Films, Ltd., one of the B. I. P. companies, for whom he worked in a directorial capacity. In 1927 produced the screen play "Shooting Stars", written by himself. and has since directed a number of successful fihiis, including "Underground", "The Runaway Princess", "A Cottage on Dartmoor", "Teil England", and the screen version of Compton Mackenzie's "Carnival". Is at present engaged in directing a new talking film, to be called "The Window Cleaner". Anthony Asquith is undoubtedly one of the best known and most successful of British film directors and owes no part of bis reputation to the famous name he bears. From the very first he was judged purely on bis merits and it is generally recognized that if the pictures be has made so far are any criterion, he nmst have absorhed a vast amount of knowledge during bis three month's sojourn in Hollywood. In fact, he is looked npon as one of the few directors who may always be relied upon to combine in film production high artistic merit with commei'cial success. „The Runaway Princess", „A Cottage on Dartmoor", „Teil England" und der Filmversion von Compton Mackenzie s „Carnival". 448
