Later toured the provinces in "Ideas", "Headlights" and "Designs". Made her London debut in 1925 in the last-nientioned play; appeared in "Riquette" in Glasgow; toured the provinces in "No, No, Nanette", in which she played the name pai^: also in "Happy-Go-Lucky" and lead in "Tip-Toes"; played in "Many Happy Returns" at the Duke of York's, London; appeared as Beauty in "Beauty and the Beast" at the Lyceum Theatre, London: was starred in "The Five o Clock Girl" at the London Hippodrome, also in "Here Conies the Bride" at the Piccadilly Theatre, and in "Blue Roses" at the Gaiety Theatre. The above is, of course, a very much abridged Version of the wonderful story of Jean Colins career. To enunierate all her big personal successes would require far more than the available space. Her name is known all over England, not only to those who have had the good fortune to see her on the stage, but to all who trouble to read the theatrieal column in their daily newspaper. She possesses to the nth degree that indefinable something that enables an actress to "put across" her own personality and those who have Seen her in one of her star parts remember her more clearly than the play itself. Jean Colin kam 1923 am Grand Theatre, Brighton, heraus, wo sie als Tänzerin in der Pantomime „Cinderella" ihren ersten großen Erfolg zu verzeichnen hatte. Sie wurde weiter verpflichtet für die Rolle der Mary in „The Savage and the Woman" und verschiedene andere große Rollen, machte dann eine Tournee durch die englischen Provinzstädte und war dabei in „Ideas". „Headlights" und „Designs" sehr erfolgreich. 1925 hatte sie ihr Londoner Debüt, und zwar in dem letzgenannten Stück, wurde anschließend für „Riquette" nach Glasgow verpflichtet, unternahm wieder eine Tournee durch die Provinzen, diesmal mit „No, No, Nanette", „Happy-Go-Lucky" und „Tip-Toes", und wieder blieb der Erfolg bei Publikum und Presse ihr nirgends versagt. Dann ging es zurück nach London. Hier spielte sie am Arts und Duke of York's Theatre eine tragende Rolle in „Many Happy Returns" und wurde weiter verpflichtet für „the Five o'Clock Girl", „Here Comes the Bride", ,.Blue Roses" u. a. m. Der beschränkte Platz verbietet es, die Reihe der Erfolge dieser jungen begabten Künstlerin anzuführen, deren größter Scharm es ist, einer jeden Rolle, die sie kreiert, ein Stückchen ihrer eigenen Persönlichkeit aufzuprägen und damit jedes Stück, in dem sie spielt, zu einem persönlichen Erlebnis für den Zuschauer zu machen. 469
