Düring three years she was starred in three musiral comedies, afterwards playing a great variety of leading parts in plays of all types and seoring sensational successes in London and New York, as well as in Australia and South Africa. Her recent plays in London include Tchekov's "Three Sisters" and "The Seagull", "Scaramouche" (18th Century costume), "Hedda Gabler" and "The King's Messenger". St. John Ervine writes of her: "Miss Swallow is in my judgement one of the ablest actresses now on the English stage", James Agate: "Miss Swallow's exquisite grace — her deft and comprehending Performance", G. T. Grein: "Füll of fine creations as the play was, the tragic figure of Miss Swallow's Mashastood out in prominence; it was an unforgettable creation", the Sydney Bulletin: "A younger Marie Tempest". Z: Dark Joan Swinstead studied for stage at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, winning the Academy"s Gold Medal. She made her first appearance on the stage in "Quality Street" at the Haymarket Theatre, London, after which she appeared successfully at various other leading London theatres. Played in "Let's Leave it at That", with Jeanne de Casalis, at the Queen's Theatre; in "A Girl's Best Friend" at the Amhassadors Theatre; in "Cynara", with Gladys Cooper and Sir Gerald du Maurier. at the Playhouse Theatre. She scored one of her most notable hits in "Lean Harvest", equalled as Norma in "Can the Leopard . . ." at the Haymarket, with Gertrude Lawrence. Joan Swinstead is one of the most promising actresses of the younger generation, and though she stayed away from the stage for a period of six years between 1922-1928, her name is not unfamiliar to London theatre-goers.
