Erzogen im Oundle und Emmanuel College, Cambridge, wo er sich einen Ehrengrad als Ingenieur holte. Er nahm Armeedienste und widmete sich dann dem Bühnenberufe, aber als Regisseur und Bühnenleiter. 1927 trat er zum Film über, verbrachte den größten Teil des Jahres 1929 in Hollywood und in New York und arbeitete bei den Fairbanks als Regieassistent. 1930 wurde er bei der British Lion Regisseur. 1932 DrehbuchRedakteur, auch trat er in dieser Eigenschaft mit der englischen Gaumont in Verbindung.
