Mr. CORRESPONDENCE Unless otherwise noted, the following re- ports are for the current week: GHIGAGO By TBAVK WIESBSEQ, VARIETY'S Chicago Office. Chicsgo Oners House Block. MAJESTIC (Lymsn B. Glover, mgr.).—"The Van Dyck," a very peculiar tragic comedy, 1* given for the first time in vaudeville here, with Harrison Hunter and two other player*. The playlet was produced at the Studebaker, tbl* city, about a year ago by Arnold Daly, it Is s highly meritorious playlet, Intensely played by Mr. Hunter. It received three curtain calls Monday. Holcorabe's "Musical Rubes" snd the singing of Anna Woodward scored. The act is much im- proved since it* premier at the Olympic seversl weeks sgo. Elfle Fsy bss appeared often In the past with the same eccentricities and songs. Work and Ower showed clever ocrobstlc feat* and sufficient comedy to keep the spectator* in good humor throughout their act. The Eight Milanese, an elaboration of the act known a* the Milan! Trio, **ng effectively. The enlargement of the act did not seem to create a better Impression thsn the Mllanlo when played here last season. The violin solo and the Ringing of the Other two original members received more recognition than the others, who arc unacquainted with tbelr method*. Harry Richard*, Dorothy Daly and Adele G. Ferguson, the latter a pretty girl with a very pleasing soprano voice, present a sketch called "Love a la Mode." It is well writ- ten, contain* many blrgbt saying* and amusing situations, and made a hit. Mitchell and Calu were entertaining with a lot of absurd talk, and Mrs. Dan McAvoy aang several songs In a pleasing way. The Sandwlnaa, a man and a woman, displayed gymnastic skill In band balanc- ing. The woman is possessed of extraordinary strength and was the sole support of the act. "Dancing Sunbeams," three girl*, danced and kicked energetically. Some of the acrobatic dancing 1* similar to the Madcaps. Lipmsn snd Lewis proved s fairly good opener. The corned la ii of the two has good methods. The conversation 1h stereotyped, particularly the style adopted by the "straight." who did not seem comfortable on the stage. Sllbon's Feline Circus Interested. EUSON'S (Sid J. Euson. mgr.).—The exploita- tions of two merry autocratic vagrants and a series of Imitations of well-known stage favorites make up the first part of the "New York Stsrs." Jacobs & Jcrmon's organization, with Pst Rellly featured. In the midst of the low comedy sur- phiHuges are highly diverting musical interpola- tions, including selections from grand opera. The attempt Is worthy of commendation and met with appreciation. The operatic singing of Zelda Ro- tall and Thos. F. Donnelly merited deserved ap- plause. Pat Rellly sppesred for the first time In years a* a crayon artist. He emerged fn street sttire and sketched the likenesses of Taft and Bryan. Rellly Is one of the busiest persons In the show. He made seversl ehsngee. In tha first psrt Rellly also presents himself as a "kid" In knickerbockers. It Is a grotesquely funny make-up. Later be appears In his familiar make-up with several others in a burlesque num- ber. "Dooley's Night Off" Is the closing piece. It haa been used by Rellly several years sgo and proved a very uncouth but smuslng farce. Rellly 1* always funny even to those who sre ac- customed to his peculiar low comedy snd heavily painted countenance. Maryland Tyson is prettier and more alert than ever. She mingles gayly with her sister Virginia, who msde herself promi- nent in seversl number*, offered s very pleasing singing and talking act. Some of 'the dialog Is rather ancient, but tbelr individual efforts brought success. Johnson snd Msrvelle and a donkey provided some smusement, with the as- sistance of a "prop" automobUe. Most of the chorus girls sre slender, and several would look better In long dresse* rsther than tights. They should smile more, or at least show they ore pleasant. The number* have been carefully ■taged, and with the exception of an inconsistent song, "Tough Guy Levy," the selections are well chosen, although they would. hardly be accept- able all season. While considerable of the material Is ueither new nor original, portions of it having been familiar- ized last season, they retain their potency as laugh producer*. Most of the converHtitlonal dia- logue Is bright and replete with genuine humor. The "Imaginary drinking" might be eliminated. Several shows sre using the em roe tiling tills sea- iion.
