VARIETY : * "THE LOVE WALTZ" "THE PIANOPHIENDS" "THE MILITARY OCTETTE" "AT A COUNTRY CLUB" "GIRL WITH THE BATON" "THE BLACK HUSSARS" "A NIGHT ON A HOUSE-BOAT" The above Headline Vaudeville Acts were staged by Lewis Hooper, now located at the %? Knickerbocker Theatre Building .Sifts. ACTS ARRANGED AND PRODUCED EQUESTRIANS. Monday next with Chss. Waldron'e burlesquers. —The Winter Carnival opened this week In Park Square Rink, only partially finished. The slx- day bike race la the principal feature.—It la on* deratood that W. T. Grover, manager of the Orphenm, la to return to New York aoon to take charge of the American. PHILADELPHIA By GEORGE K. YOUNG. KEITH'S (H. T. Jordan, mgr.).—For the second week In succession the bill is without a big "name" feature. John C. Rice and Sally Cohen were deserving of the principal honors, their sketch "Kleptomaniacs" being revived with the same success ss before. The musical act of "Willette Whltaker, esslsted by F. Wilbur Hill," Is just about the same as It was when called "Hill and Whltaker," and Just as good as ever. One of the classiest musicsl acta In vaude- ville. With several changes In the company, Kar- no's "Night In a Music Hsll" waa repeated and scored its usual big hit at the close of the show. Albert Weston does good work aa the "souse" and the quick action from start to finish wins the usual reward. T. Nelson Downs filled in several minutes with some very clever palm- ing. The travesty act, "When Caesar C's Her" was shown for the first time in this house by Jsmes and Sadie Leonard and Richard Anderson, and scored one of the big hits of the show. There is an abundance of good material and It is well bandied. Ed. Morton, a Philadelphia product, also had bis first hearing in this house. He used only straight comedy songs, excepting the "Preacher and Bear" for bis final encore number. Hla success with "coon" songs should warrant the use of st least one or two, and would be an Improvement on at least two of the songs he is using. He was given a warm welcome and scored. Griff, the English Juggler, put over a lot of droll comedy with his few bits of Juggling. He bss a great line of talk and tbe knack of getting the most out of It along with his work. Wroe's Trio made their Initial appear- ance here In a neat dancing act. The boys are clever steppers snd do well in individual and team dancing. The girl does not help much. The form of entrance and exit can stsnd s lot of Improvement. The Bellong Brothers were warmly, received for their showy fests of balanc- ing on wheels snd bicycles. The act Is well dre ss ed and the men are clean cut in their work. Felix Adler did well with his dlaleeta. Lillian Maynard pleased with her songs. Viola Engle did nicely with some comedy acrobatics, and Hag- gerty and Le Claire met with favor in an Irish skit. This pair spoil a chance for a strong finish by following some good ilk with a song. Marcel's Art Studies held over, several new posing* being shown. BIJOU (Sam Dawson, mgr.).—"Sam T. Jack's" Burlesquers were In bud shape .when they reeled here this week, the show having been made over recently with seversl changes In the com- pany. It needs a great deal of making over. And the making over might Just aa well begin with the change of first part and burlesque. Neither is worth the time It would take to patch them np. Tbe first part la labeled "The Merry Widow at Looney Park," and the burlesque "The Merry Widow and the Klddo." Both are good titles, but the majority of material la worn out bits, disconnected dialogue and unfunny comedy situations. The burlesque is only a trifle better. Probably new numbers have been put In the show which is an excuse for the ragged working of the chorus and those who lead them. There la some bright looking scenery, and when the chorus girls hud a number with which they ap- peared to be familiar, they did fairly well with It. Edgar Blxley, George Z. Wilson and Henry Fink are the principal comedians, the first two nsmed having recently Joined. The new people will require a little time to ahow Improvement In the production.
