4 VARIETY PICTURES Wednesday, Aprfl 12, 1939 Top Show Business Salaries for '37 Louis J>. Uayer topped the cor- poration salaries for 1937, oecordinp to TiiasuTv Dept fioures furnished Congress, which, thus tnafces possible publication of incomes abooe $15,000. For 193a, incomes of $75,000 and over will be appronei for publica- tion. The 1432-pa0e report lists nearly 50,000 persons who were paid from $15,000 up. Most of the pay- ments not onlu cotter salaries but bonuses, and of course, are not net incomes, since considerable busincsf expense must come out of these fig' ures. Film companies accounted for 40 ' of the 63 salaries of $200,000 or more in 1037. The fancy flffures paid pic- ture stars explains this high ratio. The N.Y. Sun estimated that of Mayer's $1,296,503 salary ($1,161,753 as production executive of Loew's, Inc, and $134,750 as v.p. of Metro- Goldwyn-Mayer), his estimated US: tax comes to $766,528, ond CoJif omia state tax to $185,425 (total tax, $951,953), leaving an untaxed bal- ance of $344,550. J. Robert Rubin, also a Loew-Metro top exec; shows a $754,254, of which $841,123 was from LoexcTs, rnc, $53,000 from M-C-M Corp., and $60,131 from M-C-M, Distribtttina Corp. inconie on which the N.Y. Sun estimates $379,470 would be VJ5. taxes, and $51,840 N.T. State-taxed, leavinff a $219,813 net: Metro-GoMwyn-tfayer paid 240 employees. $15,000 or more, while 196 employees and officers - of E. 7. duPont de ITemours It Co., and 167 of Metropolitan Life were in the $16,000 and upwards class. This breakdown groups picture companies in one classl/lcatlon, and the second—Mlscetlaheous —^ group embraces mostly lijdivtduals In all 'branches of show business, press, adv^rtisinff agencies, etc. Ben GoaU.xM • Lmb Ootdon Samael HottcatUln**, Robut HapldBl.....f Luolen Hubbard B.
