'Booth on Bents' (HKO, Edgar Kennedy comedy, 16 mins.)—En- provement over recent Kennedy comedieB even though many of laugh sequences are pure com. Edgar Kennedy moves this up into a bigher classiBcation in a story about bis troubles with a party-tossing tenant to whom he lias sublet his flat. Women at Arms' iRKO, This Is America, 18 mins.)—Despite flne mu- sical backgrounding and Margo's clear-cut spoken narrative, this does not measure up to the flne start of this series. Maybe the su\>ject is a toughie. At any rate, the activities of the femme sex in the war effort are on the dull side as projected here. Idea that American women are seeking a share in the war effort is primarily a topic for virile screen projection, but this is a bit hazy. Henry Brown, Farmer Washington, Nov. 27. Negro cadet flyers of the 99th Pur- suit Squadron at Tuskegee air field highlight a new documentary fllm, 'Henry Brbwn, Farmer,' which had its national premiere in Washington at the Booker T. theatre. Made by the U. S. Department of Agriculture, it is the first Government fllm show- ing the part American Negroes are playing in the war. Canada Lee, star of 'Native Son,' is narrator. From the cotton flelds of Alabama to the flying field of the 99th Pursuit Squadron, 'Henry Brown, Farmer,' is a rapidly movmg fllm that covers the important features of wartime agriculture in a few brief moments. Henry Brown and his family of four make up the cast. There is nothing pretentious about the fllm, but it moves with artistry and sincerity. It shows simply and directly how one farmer is trying to do his part in the 'Food-for-Free- dom* program. The fllm is directed by Roger Bar- low, with music composed by Gene ForrelL ALSO-BAN Xaexpcctod Bicfeea* (Metro. Our G»ne comedy, II mins.)—Strictly lor me kids. Highly juvaiile from start to flnidi. and ^wut 9 minutes too long. These get sadder and sadder. 'SiK BUm and a MW (WB, Melody Master. 10 mins.)—Six Hits and Miss oombo is okay here but the dubbing in of old feature material weights down the net result. Ruby Keeler and Paul Draper are seen in some' of the old footage. Doesn't do jus- tice to either of these two top tap- ster stars either in routines or cos- tumes. Wm Everybody^ War' (aOth-Foz, WPB fecial, IB mins.)—This diort supposedly made on flie Coast for the War Production Board fails miserably in proving its point. Starts out wiOi the premise that a small viUage felt for a kmg time that the present war was a long ways off —until the casualty lists stmied com- ing in. From this vital idea, it raaables on and deviates into eoont- channehi There is talk about folks staying bqme or walking to weak, no wasting of electridty, help- ing on the farm, giving troops the comforts of home, not getting over- time at the factory, etc Somtw angle is too faeav^ stressed. B certainly fails as a Sxst-rate atidienee picture. Win Price takes the rap for story and direction and Eugene O'Neil for the produdifm. Henry Fonda sounds like Henry Fonda reading the narration. 'Saath American Sparts* (WB, sports, 10 mins.)—Despite obvious attempt to plug good-neighbor pdl icy, this never quite jells. Jumps around to different counties in coO' fusing manner, leaving a blurred concepti<m at Latin-American out- standing sports. Knox Stagger Working Honrs on Coast Ediibs Puzzled Los Angeles, Dec. 1. Local theatre operators are going into hurried huddles to work out a plan of operation to coincide with new stagger .system of working hours which went into eflect Friday (27) under orders from Southern California War Transportation Coun- cil. Staggered hour plan is the natural result of gas rationing, which is expected to add 250,000 riders to street car and bus lines. Department stores, banks, schools, industrial plants, city and county buildings and all other structures housing large employment wiU open and close at designated hours to prevent traffic rushes. Exhibitors are expected to rearrange their schedules to take advantage of the ebb and flow of workers, especially for the matinee trade. COMBO AaOR-AGENT GETS GUP BRUSHOFF Hollywood, Dec. 1. Screen Actors Guild divorced it- self from file lA percenters with the adoption of a new rule whereby any member is prohibited from engaging in the agency business without flrst obtaining a withdrawal from SAG. Guild is taking the position that an actor-agent would be in a position to give preferential employment to certain players, to the disadvantage of others. Twin City Indies Balk At'Wmd^ride'Prices Minneapolis, Dec. 1. Twin City independent exhibitors, holding out against the playing of 'Goae WHh the Wind' and 'Pride of the Yankees' at advanced admission prices, claim the Metro and RKO (Goldwyn) danands are 'unreason- able' and 'iBogical.' Whereas, the Orpheum currently has boosted its price only a nickel for "Pride' the neighborhood houses practically would have to double their scales for the same picture to meet the BKO l e quii e ui ent. To go to SOc for Xlone With the Wind' also would mean a virtual doubling of the scale for most neighborhoods. Hie last downtown showing of the film was at that price and M-G is requiring it for uptown and subur- ban engagements. There bas been only one independ- ent house here, Bennie Berger's Paradise, which has played 'Wind' at SOc and It did a big business with the picture. Paramount circuit neighborhood theatres are playing it aivl prospering. The company has wittidrawn it from the independents. again irritates with his spieling. "The dyaaple Champ' (RKO Goofy-Disney, 7 mins.)—Goofy illus- trates different Olympic sports with cfl-stagc voice expfaining. Lacks usual darkling Disney touch, and highly disappointing. Lack of action and .simporting characters to liven proceedingE also hurts. Hn rh isaii Tars' (BKO. sports, 6 mins.)-This would be a fairish sort of subject if it had not been done so many times before. Nice photog- raphy and doseups marred by thin dialogue, and a breathless narrator. How to Swim' (RKO, Walt Dis- ney, 7% mins.)—Another in the 'how to^ series which is wearing thin. Lack of imagination, Action or usual deft touches are harmful Even the off-screen spieler is irritating. 'Ifi the Law' (Indie. S. B. Kunkis production. 6 mins.)—Despite O. Soglow's drawings (not animated), this novel briefie pointing up the comical .side of unu.sual laws in .some 12 states and cities fails to rej^istcr. Absence of action cartoon.s is partly to blame, but lightweight script and John Brown".'; bl<ih .spoken nairalive also Lh detrimental. Looks like an unusual idea gone awry. S. R. Kun- R;iy kis. Broadway lawyer. Is listed as 'producer. National HicatKS Sues To Reeovcr 'Excess Tax' National Theatre . Corp. has filed suit in U. S. district court in N. Y. against Joseph T. Higgins, U. S. Col- lector of Internal Revenue, for an excess tax claimed paid in 1936. National claims in its action that on Sept 17, 1930. It did not deduct that amount from its return but had NT done so it would not have had to pay any tax. Col. BmtB Out Pair Hollywood, Dec. 1. Cohunbia went to bat with two starters yesterday <Mon.), a wes'.ern and a cops-and-robbers. Charles Starrett stars in the buck- aroo picture, 'Riding West." directed by William Berke and produced by Jack Fier. Chester Morris is top- liner in the" mystery yarn.
