Fox West Coast has dropped vaude- ville from the Orpheum after a long experimental headache growing out of talent difficulties and audience apathy. , : , / ;■' - '. Policy has been temporarily re- placed by first run double bills. . NOW IT'S THE TWO TROJANS . The Three Trojans, acrobatic team, now are The Two Trojans. Sgt. Louis Regan and Pvt. Paul J. Brach- ard, who are in the Pacific fighting zone, do the same routines as before, only it's a two-man combo. The two are with an all-soldier troupe. ',, / Montreal Vaude Breather Montreal, June 13^ The-Gayety, only vaude theatre in Canada, temporarily closed Sunday (10) after a season started last sum- mer. It will be dark until last week in August when the season resumes for another winter. \ Meantime, the theatre will be. renovated. C'sfria* mn the Park, 1V.Y. (ESSEX HOUSE) Harold Stern Orch OS) uitth Frajices Lane, Helen Hadley; Mar- jorie Cowen; no minimum*or cover weekdays, Saturday $2 win. after 10 p.m. : . ' , ■ Harold Stern, recently discharged from the U. S. Navy, lost none ot his skill with the Strad While serving with Admiral King's men nor did he forget how to con- struct a melodious, full-bodied and sprightly musical organization. His new band is tailor-made for dancing and listening: Three fiddles carry most of the melodic burden with three reeds, two trumpets and a trombone also prominent although somewhat more subordinated than in most bands of this type. Piano, which comes through with nice background music and occasional solo chores, drums and string bass round out. Deep- throated Frances Lane's voice is cued to Stern's lower register fiddle tones. Stern's library sticks close to standards and boasts no socko ar- rangements, the band obviously be- ing aimed more for dancing. Only weakness when caught was in Latin tempi; which didn't sparkle because of rhythm arid maraccas difficulties. .Helen Hadley plays intermissions on piano. Mai'.iorie Cowen, songstress, also is. heard when band is oft duty. Dancing starts at 10 ■p.m.Jtp elimi- nate 20% tax for early diners. 'Donii. ;Dorm. f'afe Zanzibar, IV. Big-' Five representatives are re- ported taking the latest proposals to their principiVs and another session with the Department of Justice is scheduled for Thursday (15). There is currently more pessimism anent a peaceable outcome of con- sent negotiations than at any -time' in the past few months. Within the Department of Justice it is again felt, from accounts, that the Government will eventually be obliged to start divorcement proceedings in the courts against the Big Five, The Government's victory in the anti-trust proceedings against the Pullman "Co., according to all indi- cations, has given the Department of Justice a stronger trading position in other anti-trust actions. t . ■ Big Five reps, it is understood, be- lieve that a consent decree will be evolved and that court action will not' be necessary. Meantime, no change has: been reported in the stand of the Big Five against any further conce&iiohs than those al- ready preferred in'the consent pro- posals set up-in the Jan. 20 decree draft. The 3%'y, tax may be giving Broad- way spots a whaling these nights, but Carl'.Erbe..and. Joe Howard haven't become too intimidated by the dis- astrous results. Their Zanzibar has gotten a pasting, too, but they've had the courage to book in a 26-person, heavily budgeted show that's crack colored entertainment. If this show doesn't, draw 'em, nothing will. And at last reports biz was skyrocketing. • There are at least three acts here that can headline in practically any theatre or nitery. They would be the Berry Bios, (3), Bill Bailey and Mills Bros. (5). And there's Marva (Mrs. Joe) Louis for s.a. Mills Brothers, four singers and accompanying guitarist, are sock with their balladizing, capped by their "Paper Doll." The quintet doesn't go over as well as it might, however, in view of the acts spot- ting. They follow the Berrys (only two of the latter trio worked 1 at show caught because of an ailing leg sustained by one at the nearby Roxy, from which they're doubling). And that's the tipofl. Nothing, seemingly, can follow the Berrys when they get through with their by-now standard acrobatic hoofing. . Bill Bailey is still idolizing Bill Robinson, whom he resembles con- siderably and copies (with due credit) in a couple of routines. That patter of Bailey's, however, . still needs new gags. Mrs. Louis is attractive and niftily coiitouriered. Her voice . shows a need of training, particularly when she reaches for high notes, but when warbling in the middle regis- ters she gets by. She has an air of cultured refinement that's ingratiat- ing. " Rest of the layout includes Tina Di.xon, a rhythm shouter who does well enough early in the layout; Pee Wee Marquette, diminutive m.c„ and lrv Carroll's band (8), the lone Ofays on the layout. Carroll plays the show neatly, with maestro at the keys, and also for customer dancing. Knhn. simulating the movements of a giant turbine. Dewey sisters, decked out in Indian headdress, whirl and spin through a fast aero routine. Sid Tomack works with the comics in blackout skits ' Slack's music is neatly tempoed for dancing and backs up the show with potency. Irhogene Lynn, vocal- ist with the band, is both personable and lis tenable. BlMt* ; ROoKM '■ (HOTEL BOOSEVELT, N. O.) A'eiO Orleans, May 27. HeiiTji Jerome Orch U2). Betff McKaye, Jimmy Cook, Lebrac It Bernice, Duke Art, Jr. t Junior, An * thony i & A/?j/)i. Arthur Tracy; Mitit- nititn, $2.50. An average show that falls short of past presentations in the town's swankest nocturnal rendezvous. In-- dividually, however, several of the acts are okay. -, Jerome has one of the youngest bands seen here in some time. He mixes his numbers well and offers smooth dance rhythms. Outfit is equally at home at sweet or jive. Leader lacks finish of most maestros who have fronted bands in spot. His cjiief fault is his emceeing. Standout act is Art, Junior, who molds notables in clay along with a smooth line of chatter and an en- gaging personality. Betty McKaye and Jimmy Cook, working as sepa- rate acts in the show, are members of Jerome crew and each gets plenly of palm pounding for their warbling, especially the latter, Lebrac, aided by Bernice. looker with a nice chassis, does a hot turn on a nine-foot unicycle to rate bravos. His juggling atop the phe- wheeler while gal balances on his -shoulders, is - nifty feat. : ■ Anthony and Allen, well-dressed ballroom dance team, win plenty applause, their whirls and spins drawing several encores. Arthur Tracy. "The Street Singer," sings a highly palatable assortment of tunes | including. "Besamo Mucho," and other current faves to grab his share of kudoes. Jerome's masic keeps floor crowded during dance sessions. Biz capacity when caught. - . ; JLiuz. New Acts CHELA CAMPOS Sonets - 17 Mint, v La Conga, X. If. Chela Campos is a songbird im- ported by Jack Harris from Mexico, where she was featured on XEW, Mex radio outlet, and in El Patio, Mex nitery. She's a byword in Latiti America because of her wax- ings.. "Besame Mucho," which she introduced, and "Amor," both selling over a million discs. Miss Campos is a looker. She doesn't use her physical (leg) dis- ability to garner sympathy but reg- isters by virtue of a sweet set of i pipes and a knbw-how in songsell- ing. Gal's a good bet for radio and a surefire click in class bistros. She had to beg off when caught after do- ing three encores in addition to her three regular numbers. Her stock in trade is the sock rendition of Spanish ballads. . ./- Ttiro; Slapiev !»laxle's, I.. A. Los Angeles, May 23. Jerry Lester. Sammy Lewis' bistro seemed to be disproving opening night that the 30% cabaret tax is the kiss of death to night clubs. Room was loaded to its 600-capacity. plus overflow. What brought out this pre-30% horde of spenders? Jerry Lester, long a fav, King Sisters, singing combo plenty solid, and Freddy Slack's able crew. It was sort of « homecoming for Lester. If there's anything in the zany repertoire he can't do, our calculations are faulty. His punch-drunk barytone bit is a gem and his whole routine is con- ducive to r convulsion: However, Lester's material could stand con- siderable scrubbing. Couple of his gags were a little too rugged for even these blast habitues. King Sisters run through sev- eral songs they've recorded, best being the novelty, "Franklin D. Sinatra for President" Debonnettes are precision performers, excelling in their machine age number LA VILLA Harpist » Mins. -. .,V-.. Le Ruban Bleu, X. Y. Dusky harp strummer from Detroit making N. Y. nitery debut looks like solution of Ruban's problem of filling opening spot. La Villa replaces Daphne HeHman who held down the teeoff position with her harp for two weeks. Newcomer displays little In way of salesmanship, being content to let her nimble fingers justify hex- presence on the tiny stage. .Opens with "Intermezzo." which Ts done" cleanly and without too much fancy embroidery. "Long Ago and Far Away" gets brighter, but when La Villa goes into "Swanee River" the harp becomes a different instrument. This swings solidly and gets deft imaginative twists with all 10 of performer's fingers going on the time-and-a-half shift. Gal works theme of "Alexander's Ragtime Band" into "River" during clever improvising. Off to hand as solid as her music, she returns for "Endear- ing Young Charms" encore. Donn. LEE DAVIS Cesaedy II Minx. -:-'<-"■ '.''•:.' ' State, N. T. Lee Davis, comedian, has satisfac- tory stage presence and a pleasant speaking voice both for emceeing, which he essayed here, and comedy. His material is leaden and fa- miliar, with scarcely a strong laugh line in his entire routine. A bit about being a star In Holly- wood is trite and colorless while his satirical singing-talking version- of the Rinso White radio commercials is uninspired. ' ' Mori.
