Dancers Too CBS also has made good use of recordings on its Sunday night dance shows, which have featured in the past such w.k, terpers as Kather- ine Dunham, Valerie Bettis, Pauline Koner, etc. By fitting the choreog; raphy to the music, the web's produ- cers have a guarantee that the tempo won't be hypoed or slowed down, which might occur it a conductor were handling a live orchestra. Outside of the fact that a live orchestra would servo to dress up a show considerably, the chief draw- back to the use of platters is the difficulty faced by broadcasters in presenting a tyro singer: who's not yet made any recordings. In such cases, the "broadcaster is forced to use a disk with only instrumental music, and the singer actually voices the words \tbove the. music in the background. Since hardly any such recordings are made to have words put to them, it requires plenty of rehearsal to set the routine. Sy.stem thus makes it difficult for a singer just starting out to break into tele- vision. ■, . Broadca,stcrs are reluctant to say they'd just as soon get along without Petrillo,' although some ha\e voiced concern over where, they'd put a live orchestra with present studio space as crowded as it is. It's be- lieved probable, however, that they'll be only t6o glad to fall in line .when the AFM decides to enter the video picture, in view of the affiliation most of them hjave with radio in- :; terests.' Peter Lyon, eastern region veepee of the Guild, is flying to the Coast tomorrow (Thurs.) with : Dorothy Bryant, national exec sec of the organization, and Stuart Hawkins. Sam Moore, Guild national proxy, is in Hollywood. Herb Futran, until recently veepee in charge of the midwest region with h. q. in Chi., is also in Hollywood now, thus put- ting the Guild's top leadership there for the Friday conference. It was ex_pected that Orin Tovrov wlio succeeded Futran as the Chi veepee, may also reach the Coast in time for the meeting. Lyon has headed the negotiating committee with the Pour-A'S: from the beginning. He declared he saw ho use in continuing talks when agencies have refused to acknowl- edge that the principle of script- licensing must rule in all cases. The Guild has been insisting on what it calls "writers' rights" before it would proceed to any other de- tails in its dealings with the Four- A's. . A work stoppage by scripters. while it would be directed at the ad agencies involved, would hit the top sponsored shows on the air, with the writers being almost 100% in the Guild. Net staffers would probably not be affected, as long as there was no effort to shift them from net sustainers and sucli regu- lar vjeb work into the sponsored programming. In the latter event, the Guild might call out the net writers too.
