Wednceday, October 18, 1948 47 Night Club Reviews Harem, IV. Y. Piroska, WoUj/ Wnnger Girls, ni>\aae, Moroccans (4), ungcr Twins with Mclodears (6) and Al SiVattl. Kod Alexander, AX White. Marcii Leigfiton. Red Buttons, Charles Blackmm Ore?)., Dowe Rob- erts; $2.50 minimum, " Nat Hariris has taken a terrific chance reopening the Harem with the current bill of comparatively no-name value, and it'll require an eaually terrif .job of exploitation to operate on that basis. When once the customers are inside there's enough entertainment to tatisfy most tastes; but the idea, first, is to get 'em Inside! The talent outlay is headed by i» young comedian who's been around for years, despite his com- parative youth'. That would be Bed Buttons, who's played bur- lesque, smaller cates and more re- cently has clicked in Broadway musicomedy. The Harem is prob- ably his biggest chance to date. And he makes good. Tlie Unger Twins have been as- tembled as an act by Al Siegal, and they are i-eviewed extensively un- der New Acts. They're accomped In a song and dance turn -by the Melodeai-s, gal sextet. Siegal is at the piano for this one. And there's Delage, one of the most enterprising magicians around, assisted by an unbilled girl. Buttons is getting the top billing here, and rightly so. He has poise, an assured delivery and the sort of little-boy quality that labels him "cute" for the dames as soon as he walks on. His material frequently ' 'misses fire, but he's the sort of performer who keeps punching all the way. ' Often he makes some of his trite material sound far better than it really is. He has an autograph- book number, which is standard in , his repertoire, but it's still good for laughs, but most of his othei? fluff needs a going-over. He works 80 minutes, and there's never a lagging interest. Delage has a bagful of magico tricks. He hits hard, works fast and is a click the moment he walks on, most of the time with standard stunts, but all done with a savoir , faire that most veteran magicos 1 never acquire -in a lifetime of per- forming. The best stunt, of course, is the one in which he's locked in ■ the trunk. In a matter of seconds he's out of it, but the girl is in it instead.. This, of course, is done behind a raised curtaih. Rest of the show comprises, notably, the Four Moroccans, with their phenomenal acrobatics that have now become standard in American theatres -and cafes. • They're always pretty close to be- ' ing sensational, and they don't miss out here. Marcia Leighton is the show's ballerina, and she has a briel, turn rthat: clicks. Jlod Alexander , al^o has a brief dance stint and ditto for Mons. Piroska. The Wally Wanger Girls are "orchidaceous" enough to round . out the show, whose motif is at least partially that of the Middle East, in keeping with the decor of the . Harem. Charles Blackman batons the : oroh for the show, and he does an : effective job. ■ Kahn.. and it's smash stuff all the way. The $7,S00 talent outlay includes Eddie Oliver's orch, now packaged With Hildegarde. It's a smart ]ob of packaging for the band provides lush backing for her numbers and does an excellent job of dishing 4ansapatiDn. Kap, Mayfair Uooin, Chi > (BLACKSTONE HOTEL) Chicago, Oct. 8. Abe Burroios with Herman' Saundersi accompanist; Ray Mor- ton Orch; $3.50 minitmm, $1 cover. Opening night audience was a pushover for Abe Burrows' literate gibes, even though it was more of a cross-section crowd than a claque turnout. Comic, making his first Chicago appearance, worked up prime responses that assure him of expansive followings on repeats in these parts. . Onetime radio scripter isolates the threadbare in Tin Pan Alley, Hollywood and Kilocycle Corner, then proceeds to caricature it in choice style. His songs-ridicule- trite sentiments and standard cliches via the epitome technique. The method is to push a concen- trated bromide to the brink of absurdity rather, than to drench it in acid. Nobody gets hurt and there's no blue. 'In his. fast-moving 40-mlnute stint comedian! puts the end-all on a half dozen songs,: labeled as love type, Gypsy type, French type and so on. Weak by comparison is "Tokyo," illustrating the topical type. The others are fine satire, shaped to catch full measure of laughs and applause. —' Comic goeS'.to the keyboard for travesties on film travelogs. The ■ Maisonette remains one of the nicer bistros .iniiitown, in a hotel or otherwise, and seemingly the theory of only a midnight pei> formance for its ; solo, act seems sufficient. It was found that some of the fashionably late-dining cus- tomers prefered either marathon dansapation or resented , the 9:30 "act," claiming it was interfering with their dining at just the wrong period.
