Ladd Lyon <2>, Sheila Barrett, The Pitchmen (3 >, Bernadette Phetan Dancer s (3>, George Dunn, Ben Yost’s Vik- inps (3i, Elsa k Waldo, 3 Sidneys, Don Albert House Orch; “Little Big Horn ” (Lipi, reviewed in Variety May 30. ’51. Diversified layout of standard turns this sesh moves at an easy clip, with plenty of appeal for all tastes. It was SRO at the third show (261 opening day. • Sheila Barrett's return to the boards after a long absence high* lights the 10-act affair. Spotted fourth. Miss Barrett starts off slowly with a Tallulah Bankhead carbon, warms up house with ex- pert Bert La hr and W. C. Fields copies, and then slips to only mod- erate returns on a Lionel Barry- more duplicate that suffers from weak material. She really gets go- ing in latter half with a pair of seek monologs. Her impression of a southern belle tippling at a New York bar is out of the top drawer, and her workover of a cockney- type streetwalker bidding farewell to an American GI, although a bit overlong, displays enough artistry and poignancy to net sock results. The Pitchmen (3*. posted win hefty mitting throughout their fast-paced zany musicale. With Don Juielle at the keyboard, they whip across a flock of musical Im- pressions with a series of beat-up instruments that draw plenty of yocks. Although act is standard, boys could modernize routine for better results. Their bit, for in- stance. in which they introduce impressions of Clyde McCoy and Wayne King as “bandleaders you listen to on radio," misses since both McCoy and King have been long gone from the webs and are unfamiliar to many audiences con- ditioned by TV. In the next-to-closing. Elsa 6t Waldo score with their comedy terps. Hypoed by silly getups, mixed team hits audience risibili- ties all the way. Spotted eighth, the Ben Yost Vikings <5> open with some semi-classical airs and segue to a medley from "South Pacific” for good results. The quintet is well integrated and dis- play solid stage savvy. They wind up with okay "Old Man River.” Benham Bros. (2) tee off in a speedy hoofing turn. Both lads win easy plaudits for their aero- terps. They alternate their step- ping with a series of okay leaps and somersaults. Carl f’mpson 6c His Human- ettes are on next to sock house reaction. Working with femme on the string manipulation. Simpson brings on an assortment of pup- pets that range from magicos to Jive dancers. Third is Ladd Lyon, amiable standard whose aero feats win good mitting. Lyon uses gal from audience (later revealed as his sister) on some good balancing stunts; he formerly used a brother. The Bernadette Phelan Dancers (3). sixth, net fair reaction in a sometimes pretentious choreog- raphic offering. Comprised of a femme and two men, turn gets across a few femme-tossing bits and quasi-ballet steps. George Dunn delivers a pleasant monolog in the seventh spotting. Dunn works in the Will Rogers vein and gets easy yocks for his commentary and rope tricks. The 3 Sidneys (New Acts) wind up with an exciting unicycle turn. Don Albert’s house orch cuts show with its usual facility. C hicago. I hi Chicago. July 27. Barr A Estes, Helen O’Connell , Mayo Bros. (2), Dean Martin A Jerry Lewis, Dick Stabile Orch; “No Questions Asked ” <M-G>. The third balcony is open and the roof is off all this week at the Chicago. The harum-scarum Martin 6c Lewis are back again and, weather permitting, are out to break the house record set by Jack Benny four years ago. Benny set his mark at a 95c top, while M6cL are working at $1.25, with kids paying 98c straight, as do the early birds, before 1 p.m. Lads are still employing the free photo tease to clear the aisles, but the juves are wise to the gimmick and refuse to budge foi less than three or four shows. It will all cut into the take, but duo should still rack up nice piece of change for Income iu department. It’s pleasing to note that the zanies carry on without doing the same show twice. While there Is a blue note here and there, there has been a remarkable cut in vul- garisms. It’s added stature for the comics, who are past the stage of needing dirty material. For finale, comics don floaters to do an imitation of old vaude soft-shoe team, throwing the straws into the seats to close the show. Helen O’Connell .is a welcome note of sanity in the 45 minutes, with charming blonde still ringing the bell with standards of a few years back. She starts with "Tak- ing a Chance on Love” and then brings back a medley of some of the tunes she sang with Jimmy Dorsey, including “All of Me." "Soft Lights" and "Tangerine” Mayo Bros, display some frantic footwork on top of a pisiform, with heftiest hand given for some fast splits and rises accomplished in small space. Barr 6c Estes get chuckles with comedy dance stint. Dick Stabile takes over the aug- mented house band, doing the em- cee chores, and also acting as comedy foil for the boys Zahe Olyaapla* Miami Miami. July 28. The Redheads (3).
