56 music PfiSSTEFf Wednesday, May 25, 1955 Jocks, Jukes and Disks Bv MIKE GROSS' Alan Dale: “Sweet and Gentle" —“You Still Mean The Same To Me” (Coral). The Latino beat and Alan Dale seem to be meant for each other. Crooner went a long way with “Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White" and should go even farther "with “Sweet and Gen- tle.” Tune is in the cha-jcha-cha rhythm groove with a slick lyric and Dale delivers with a proper chile verve. “You Still Mean The Same To Me,” on the flip side* is in a more serious and romantic mood, but it doesn’t quite come off. Doris Day: “I’ll Never. Stop Lov- ing You”-“Never Look Back” (Co- lumbia). When Doris Day gets ,a solid ballad item to work With, it’s a cinch for big play on all levels. She's got the material in “I’ll Nev- er Stop Loving; You” and she gives it the kind of vocalizing that matches her “Secret Love” treat- couple of wax tries and this cou- pling also falls short. “If It’s A Dream,” from the legituner “Sev- enth Heaven,” is a slow and unin- teresting ballad effort while “For- give Me’’ is just an ordinary ballad concoction. Pearl Bailey: “World Weary"- “Big Words” (Coral). Noel Cow- ard’s “World Weary” is right up Pearl Bailey’s vocal alley. Her “tired” piping pattern fits in to the tune’s mood and she builds it into a whammo item that could take off, She's in similar form on the flip side but the appeal here is mainly for her die-hard fans. Nat (King) Cole: “The Blues From Kiss Me Deadly”-“My One Sin” (Capitol). Although Nat (King) Cole, still has “Darling,. Je Vous Aime Beaucoup” and “A Blossom Fell” working for him* the diskery has put a new slice on the market because of a picture ALAN DALE SWEET AND, GENTLE (Coral) '. .You Still Mean the Same to Me. DORIS DAY I’LL NEVER STOP LOVING YOU ° ( Columbia) .. .... .Never Look Back ART MOONEY ORCH .... ALABAMA JUBILEE ( MGM ) Paddlin’ Madeline Home ment of a few years back. Tune’s showcasing in the Metro pic, “Love Me Or Leave Me,” will also help it along to the top. Also from the pic, “Never Look Back,” is an okay entry. Art Mooney Orch: “Alabama Jubilee” - “Paddlin’ Madeline Home” (MGM). “Alabama Jubilee” has been stirring up some noise on the indie Media label, but it’s Art Mooney’s baby from here on in. Still riding hot with “Honey Babe,” Mooney is a shoo-in to pick up ex- tra dividends with this rowdy slice that’s got an old-fashioned flavor, but the kind of fresh rhythmic bounce that appeals to the young folk who buy the records today. ^ He gives a similar treatment (the accent is on the banjo) to “Paddlin’ Madeline Home.” Cliffie Stone: “The Popcorn Song” - “Barracuda” (Capitol). There hasn’t been a breakthrough novelty in some time so the mar- ket could be ready for “The Pop- corn Song.” It’s got an insistant beat and a catchphrase, “too pooped to pop,” that could carry it to the top. It’s Cliffie Stone's first chance to crack into the pop field and it’s a good one. The flip side is “Barracuda,” a frantic item that makes a lot of noise but adds up to very little. Kitty Kallen: ‘.‘If It’s A Dream”- “Forgive Me” (Decca). Kitty Kal- len has missed the boat in her past commitment. (He sings the blues song on the soundtrack of DA’s “Kiss Me Deadly”). The latest cut won’t take any play away from his high-riders because it’s a contrived and uninspired entry that even his deft vocalling attack can’t help. If there weren't so many other Cole dices running concurrently, “My One Sin” would have a better take- off chance. Fred AsUli^: “Something’s Got- ta Give”-“SliHfoot” (RCA Victor), Coupling of times from..the 20th- Fox pic, “Daddy Long Legs,” builds into a winning shellac piece via the effortless but highly ryhthmical vocalling of Fred As- taire, who stars in the film. “Some- thing’s Gotta Give” is one of the standout tunes of the year And though Astaire has strong competi- tion on the side, he should do okay commercially with it because of the potency of the pic tieup. “Slue- foot” is a breezy and lighthearted affair right up Astaire’s alley. Connee Boswell: “Learn To Pray Every Day”-“Our Lady Of The Highway” (Decca). “Learn To Pray Every Day” is a religioso that’ll be .around long after the current pop hits have faded. Mes- age and melody aren’t overworked and Connee Boswell delivers in a sincere and effective manner. Flip side is in a similar mood „ with thrush in top form. LAWRENCE WELK and his CHAMPAGNE MUSIC 193d Consecutive Week, Aragon Bairroom, Santa Monica, Calif • (Exclusively on Coral Records HEY MISTER BANJQ • LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME Big Wax Encyclopedia In Col’s Jure ‘We Know’ Package; Easy to Take Columbia Records has come up with a topflight album for the juve ‘market in its “Now We Know” package. Sub-tagged “Songs to Learn By,” the set is a general science course taught to the tune of Thythmic Jingles. Although it’s pegged for the 5-to-10-year-old age bracket the oldsters will get plenty nf enjoyment and infofrom it, too. Album covers a variety of sub- jects such as “What Makes the Weather?” “Why Does a Bee -Buzz?” “Why Do Stars TAvinfcte?” “Why Is the Sky Blue?” and the like. Hy Zaret and Lou Singer have boiled the answers' down To simple terms with clever wordage and lilting melodies. The kids are sure to give it plenty of spinning time and learn something about the world they live in while they’re at it. The singing chores are split be- tween Tom Glazer and Paul Tripp. Each delivers in an easy, unpreten- tious manner that the kids will go for. Orch and chorus backing is spirited and sprightly. Hecky Krasnow, Col’s kidivision chief, rates a bow for putting the wholfc thing together in such an expert manner. Col has packaged 17 info jingles on a 12-inch LP which It's peddling at $3.95. Gtos. Ever since Sinatra moved to Capitol from Columbia a few years ago, he’s been digging into the standard catalogs for album material. This 12-inch LP follows the "pattern set by his two previous sets, “Songs For Young Lovers” and “Swing Easy,” and it, too, is a shoo-in for big sales. There’s a lot of Sinatra in this collection. He’s got 16 songs to work' with and each is a Tin Pan Alley gem. Only new one in the batch is the title song by Dave Mann and Bob Hilliard but it’s got the qualities of a stand- ard and coul'd be pulled out of the set for a pop push as a single. Much of the credit for. set’s ex- cellence belongs to Nelson Riddle for his tasty arrangements and orch backing. Betty Comden 1c Adolph Green: “Comden and Green” (Heritage), Although Betty Comden and Adolph Green have been sticking to the .typewriter for the past decade, they’re not new to the performing end of the biz, . so the album means a little more than just another pair of writers singing their own stuff. Duo was part of a pretty hot nitery act, tagged The Revuers, bef ore 'the ' World War II and they haven’t forgotten any of their song-selling techniques. They’ve still got the bistro bounce and an exuberance that adds up to a lot of fun. Set includes songs written for “On The Town” and “Wonderful Town,” with Leonard Bernstein, “Billion Dollar Baby,” with Morton Gould, “Two On The Aisle” and “Peter Pan” with Jule Styne and the pic “Good News,” with Roger Edens. The showtune fan will go for this 12-inch LP set in a big way. . ■ Cj Coleman Trio: "Piano Pat- terns” (Benida). Theta are some interesting jazz patterns offered in this 10-inch LP by pianist Cy Cole- man and his two aides, John Creel, drums, and Ernie Furtado, bass. The boys give the eight standards an inventive and rhyth- mic beat that displays a progres- sive attack. Among the best of the lot are “You. Took Advantage of Me,” “April In Paris” and “Taking A Chance on Love.” Frankie Carle: “Plays Colt Porter” "(RCA Victor)). Working with a rhythm accompaniment, Frankie Carle keyboards his way through a Cole Porter catalog for tiptop results. Carle doesn’t bother to fool around with any Intricate piano stylings. He plays its straight, accenting the composer’s melodic line to Its fullest. The dozen tunes in the 12-inch LP are representative of Porter’s cleffing style and Carle treats ’em each with care and taste. Ralph Flanagan Orch: '‘Dangerl Heartbreak Ahead”-“Silver Moon”* “Whatever Lola Wants”-* 4 Y o u n g and Foolish” (RCA Victor). This extended play . set tagged “Top Pops For Dancing,” shows off the Flanagan orch to good advantage. Band has an exciting drive, espe- cially on “Lola,” and the arrange- ments on each have an appealing inventiveness in its rhythm ap- proach that will appeal to the terp fans. The EP should rack up a big score. ZEKE MANNERS INC. Hollywood, May 24. Zake Manners, KFWB disk jock, has formed Zeke Manners Enter- prises.
