FORTUNES OF ACTORS. Actors who may be mentioned in the multi-rich class are David War- field, William Crane, William Gillette, Francis Wilson and Julian Eltinge. Others who live in affluence are Maude Adams, with her estates on Long Island and in the CatskMls and her Manhattan real estate; John Dcew and his country home at East Hanrp- ton; May Irwin with a fad for bQy- ing New York apartment houses, and Duetin and William Farnum, with their beautiful homes in Sag Harbor and Bucksport. The large fortunes of the theatre may be traced almost without excep- tion to a profit-sharing arrangement which many of the stars have with the managers. Under this system it is customary for the theatrical man- ager to pay the star actor or actress a proportion of the net profits, in addition to the fixed sum for living expenses. The weekly allowance varies from $500 to $1,000, and in a few cas<» even more. The profits may mean a fortune if the play is a success or be non-existent if it is a failure. Then the manager shoulders the loss. With Maude Adams, Ethel Barry- ' more, John Drew and other stars mai- aged by Charles Frohman probably no one except themselves and Mr. Frohman's oflice staff know their ex- aci share in the season's profits. Mr. Frohman's arrangements with his stars are said to be verbal, not writ- ten agreements.
