SAMMARCO, G. MARIO, Baritone
Mario Sammarco was born in Palermo, Sicily, December 13, 1873. | His musical studies were pursued under Antonio Cantelli, and he made his operatic début in Le Villi, the youthful opera of Puccini, in Milan, 1894, singing the leading baritone réle. After that he sang in Brescia, and was then engaged for Giordano’s opera, Andrea Chenier, at La Scala, Milan.
His great success in this opera established his position, and he has since been in demand, singing in Russia, Vienna, Berlin, Brussels, Paris, Lisbon, Madrid, and all the chief theatres of Italy. The coming spring season at Covent Garden, London, will be his sixth consecutive engagement in that opera house, where he is a great favorite. Coming to the Manhattan Opera House, New York City, for its first season, he remained during its existence as a home of grand opera, and has been a favorite artist this season with the Chicago-Philadelphia Company.
Signor Sammarco has a baritone voice of unusual richness and power. He is as much at home on the concert as on the operatic stage, and his first London recital jast autumn was a brilliant success. His operatic repertoire is most extensive; among the réles which he sings may be mentioned Falstaff, Jago, Rigoletto, tena. Scarpia, Sharpless, Marcel, Jack Rance, Figaro and Germont.
The records which we issue here are perfect specimens of Sammarco’s singing. All the roundness of tone, the volume, the perfect phrasing and technique for which the baritone is celebrated are perfectly reproduced.
