Harlan ; ZEROLA, NICOLA, Tenor NicblagZerolaaanelbertan Naples in 1876. When the future artist wished to make music his profession there was parental opposition. His father wished him to be a civil engineer and he had, indeed, already begun his engineering studies at the University of Naples. However, seeing the young man’s determination, and realizing his great natural gifts, his father finally relented, and Sig. Zerola began working seriously for an operatic career. After training his voice at the famous conservatory of his native city and under the best private masters, Zerola | made his début as Canio in ‘Leoncavallo’s opera, PagCopy’t Dover St. Studios liacci, at Trieste. His success was instantaneous and engagements quickly followed for the leading theatres of Italy, including the San Carlo of Naples for Madnd ; for Lisbon, where he sang the leading tenor réles in The Jewess, and Un Ballo in Maschera. Then came tours to Mexico, Havana and Central America. In the autumn of 1909 he appeared in New York in I] Trovatore with a company then giving opera at the Academy of Music, and made such a tremendous success that he was immediately engaged for the Manhattan Opera House, where he made a strong impression in the réles of Canio, Richard and Otello. With Mr. Hammerstein’s retirement Zerola went to the Philadelphia-Chicago Company, where he repeated his success of the previous season. The tenor is, this season singing in Italy. The Victor has recorded fourteen of Zerola’s finest numbers and the records are remarkable for their great volume.
