CULP, JULIA, Mezzo-Soprano
The Victor announces with pride the successful termination of negotiations for the exclusioe record services of Julia Culp, the distinguished mezzo-soprano, ctnd whose success in America has been almost unprecedented.
Mme. Culp was born in Holland and recaved her first musical training in the Amsterdam Conservatory, afterward going to Balin, where she studied with Mme. Gerster. She made her first public apF>earance in Germany at a concert in Magdeburg in 1903, and soon afterward she sang at a concert in Berlin, when her success was assured. To-day she has only to announce a Balm concert and the house is sold out weeks ahead, while Austria-Hungary, Russia,
England, France, Belgium, Holland, Spain, Italy and Scandinavia have all acclaimed her as a peerless artist.
Mme. Culp now lives at Zehlendorfi, a suburb of Berlin, where she has a charming Dutch home. She loves ha native land, howeva, and every summer spends ten days as a sp>ecial guest of the Queen at Ha Loo. The Queen Mother of Holland has been a patroness of the artist for many years.
Mme. Culp has chosen for ha first Victor records a favorite German aadle song and an old English ballad. The “ Drink to Me Only" is exquisitely sung in the clearest of Elnglish, only a slight but piquant and fascinating accent showing tha h is not ha native language.
The singer's rendering of Brahm’s beautiful Lullaby is a tender and lovely one. That admirable artist, Coenraad V. Bos, accompanies his countrywoman in the Oadle Song with his usual sympathetic skill.
