It was on December 5, 1893, in New York, that Melba was revealed to the American public. Who that was present will ever forget the marvelous voice that burst on their charmed ears at that ime? Such power and brilliancy, such captivating ease of execution, such warmth and loveliness were simply astonishing. Music-lovers took the singer to their hearts that night, and to-day she is more firmly intrenched in their affection than ever. Melba was born Nellie Mitchell, at Burnley, near Melbourne, Australia. Her father was a Scotch contractor who had been in Australia some years. He was proud se nt ff Sa of his daughter’s musical talent, but objected to her follow3 WAN Ms S ing it as a profession, and it was not until her marriage : to Captain Charles Armstrong that she finally decided on a musical career. The singer went to Europe in 1886, and began to study under Mme. Marchesi, making such rapid progress that her début was made in Brussels in 1887 under the name of Melba (derived, of course, from her native city), and her success was immediate. London first heard her in 1888, Paris in 1889, St. Petersburg in 1891, Milan in 1892, and New York, as mentioned above, in 1893. Melba is to-day singing with the same delightful freshness, purity and power that have enthralled her audiences in the past. It is a matter for congratulation that the Melba records have been secured when the great singer was at her best, so that posterity will hear her in the full tide of her powers. e Like all the greatest singers of the world, the diva makes records exclusively for the ictor.
