SAMMARCO, G. MARIO, Baritone (Sahm-mar’-koh)
Mario Sammarco was born in Palermo, Sicily, December 13, 1873. His musical studies were pursued under Antonio Cantelli, and he made his operatic début in Milan, 1894, and was then engaged for Giordano’s opera, Andrea Chenier, at La Scala.
His great success in this opera established his position, and he has since been in demand, singing in all the chief cities of Europe. The last spring season at Covent Garden, London, was his sixth consecutive engagement in that opera house, where he is a great favorite. Coming to the Manhattan Opera House, New York City, for its first season, he remained during its existence as a home of grand opera, and was a favorite SAM MARCO artist last season with the Chicago-Philadelphia Company.
Signor Sammarco has a baritone voice of unusual richness and power, and his operatic repertoire is most extensive. The records which we issue here are perfect specimens of the artist's singing, all the roundness of tone, the volume, the perfect phrasing and technique for which he is celebrated being perfectly reproduced.
