He was destined for a civil engineer, and graduated from the Polytechnic; but his love for music compelled him to enter the Conservatoire, where he was one of the most brilliant pupils of his class. He was soon placed on the staff of the Opera Comique, where he remained continuously until brought over by the Metro| politan in 1909; and during his stay in America dupli© cated his French success. | In the records which M.
