Some compositions of this period not successful, and Brahms spent some: years in further study. In 1862 went.Vienna as conductor, bringing out choral works by Bach. and, Handel with great lustre. His first symphony, upon: which he had worked for ten years, off and on, presented 1876, with great success. ~ Greatest work, his Requiem, ‘a sacred cantata, performed. Bremen, 1868 ; London, 1873: United States, 1884. Wrote several symphonies, eek exquisite, Phanber! music. Songs very beautiful, ranking with those of Schubert, Schumann and.Franz, and he was one of the foremost com-—
