aa a a hate tres As SEE ES OBER, MARGARETE, Contralto Ob The engagement by the Metropolitan of this accomplished artist from the Berlin Opera has been a most notable one, as her triumphs as Brangaene, Ortrud, Mariana, Amneris and Octavia have been complete. Mme. Ober's Octavia (in Rosenkavalier), especially, was a revelation to Metropolitan audiences. Says the New York Times: — “Foremost among the singers who take part in this performance is Miss Margarete Ober, the representative of Octavian, the Rosenkavalier. A, more brilliant piece of work has not been enjoyed here for a long time. The fire, vivacity and youthful araor, the mischievous comic spirit of her acting, the adroitness with which she carries off the somewhat difhcult task of a young woman representing a young man disguised as a young woman, are wholly delightful. She engages all the sympathies of her listeners at once and keeps them for the Rosenkavalier through the whole opera.” Mme. Ober’s first engagement was at Stettin, where her work attracted the attention of the manager of the Berlin Opera, and after six months.in Stettin she was engaged for Berlin. For six years’ she has remained at the Royal Opera, playing a great number of é) roles with success, and ‘her Metropolitan engagement was the first outside of Berlin. PADEREWSKI, IGNACE JAN, Pianist (Pad-er-ef" -skee)
The Victor Company begs to announce that Ignace Jan Paderewski, the most gifted and remarkable pianist the world has ever known, has agreed to make records exclusively for the Victor during a long term of years, and the first of the records produced under this agreement are now offered.
Eight numbers which are always prime favorites at the Paderewski concerts have been chosen by him for his first representation in the Victor lists, among which are the graceful valse which at his concerts always forms part of the eagerly awaited Chopin group; the familiar and beloved minuet, which the virtuoso does not usually include in his printed programmes; and a famous Schubert-Liszt piece.
The pianist has also played two Liszt numbers, the
