LEN BISHOP OF TORONTO WINS. COVETED QUIGLEY AWARD AS "WORLD'S BEST SHOWMAN”
A highlight of the four-day session at the Inn On The Park of Toronto of leading Canadian showmen was the presentation to Leonard Bishop, veteran manager of Famous Players’ Hollywood theatre of the Quigley Award for showmanship.
The presentation was made during the annual luncheon of the Motion Picture Theatres Association of Ontario by R. W. Bolstad who awarded the plaque on behalf of Martin Quigley, sponsor of the annual competition.
In presenting the award Mr. Bolstad said:
“The Quigley Award is the highest honour in the world for showmanship.
“It is won every year in competition between theatre managers from all parts of the world and their entries are carefully judged by a panel of leading distributors and advertising agency experts.
“It is a proud moment for me, as President of Famous Players, to present the coveted Quigley Award to our own Leonard Bishop who is thus acknowledged officially by the Quigley Award Committee to be the world’s greatest showman for 1966.
“Len won this year’s Quigley Award for his fantastic campaign for ‘MARY POPPINS” at the dual auditorium Hollywood theatre in Toronto. Under his expert and resourceful showmanship “MARY POPPINS” established a world record run for one theatre at regular prices.
“In winning the Quigley Award Len has brought honour not only to himself but to our Company and Canadian showmanship which is among the best in the world.
“The Quigley Award has come to Canada before — it was won by both Charlie Doctor and Ivan Ackery of Famous Players theatres and by Vic Nowe of Odeon.
“It is my great pleasure to present this plaque to our Len Bishop, the Master Showman of the Year with the hope that he'll win another one soon — like next year!”
