DAN KRENDEL HONOURED AS PICTURE PIONEER OF THE YEAR! At a ceremony attended by 500 guests, Famous Players’ Dan Krendel was honoured as the "Pioneer Of The Year” at the Inn On The Park in Toronto on November 7th. Dan received his award, a handsome silver trophy, from an old friend, Morris Stein, a previous Pioneer of the Year winner. Sharing honours with Dan were Famous Players’ division manager on British Columbia, Maynard S. Joiner; Pat Travers, business manager for local 173 of the IATSE; Arthur P. Bahen, Eastern Division Manager for the Quebec and Maritime theatres for Odeon theatres and Dave Rothstein, Winnipeg theatre and hotel chain operator. lt was an emotional occasion as Dan received the highest award the Picture Pioneers can offer from Morris Stein, his former boss in Famous Players. Witnessing the presentation with particular pride were Dan’s daughter and her husband, Sam Landeau and his three small grand-children. Besides being winners of the Pioneer of the Year award, both Dan Krendel and Morris Stein had been previously honoured by Variety Club of Ontario as recipients of the Heart Award. Born in Winnipeg, Krendel entered the movie industry in 1926 as a writer for Exhibitors’ Daily Review in New York. The following year he joined Warner Brothers in Winnipeg as a salesman and in 1928 moved to Famous Players as publicity director for the circuit’s Metropolitan Theatre in that city. In 1929 he was moved to Windsor, Ont., as assistant manager at the Capitol and later to Toronto as manager of the St. Clair. Within a short time, Krendel was promoted to manage the downtown Tivoli where he conducted en a managers’ school, preparatory to taking over pam rennet as manager of Famous’ Niagara District theatres, #7 ) with headquarters in Hamilton. In 1942, Krendel returned to Toronto as manager of the circuit’s A district.
