Known as the original actor pugilist, graduating from the ranks of one of the best welterweights in America, he joined the theatrical profession and before associating himself with the silent drama, Mr. Elmer had a vast and highly successful career in the legitimate, his chief engagements being with Fred Ward and Louis James entour for two years in Shakespearean repertoire; following which he filled various engagements with well-known stock companies in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and Brooklyn. Probably Mr. Elmer's greatest success on the legitimate was made in "Sporting Life," in which he toured the large Eastern cities for two years with Bob Hilliard.. Made his debut in the motion pictures in February, 1913, with the Biograph Co.. later joining the forces of Selig Co., Los Angeles, Cal., afterwards associating himself with the Lasky Feature Film Company, where he is at present engaged. Some of Mr. Elmer's recent successes have been his Cash Hawkins in "The Squawman" and Trampus in "The Virginian," also Biff Bates in "Bobby Burnette." Mr. Elmer was the original founder and instructor of "The New Millionaires Athletic Club" of New York City, which was the most select athletic club in America.
