HOOVER PHOtO OOROTHY GISH. Born in Dayton, Ohio. At the age of four she played her first professional engagement, playing the role of Little Willie in "East Lynn." After five years before the footlights, Miss Gish left the stage and entered a girls' school in Virginia, remaining there until 1912, when she went to New York. When only fourteen years old. after the necessary parental consent had been secured, she joined the Biograph under the direction of Mr. Griffith. She immediately made wonderful headway, until today she is considered one of the most versatile of actresses in the silent drama. While appearing to excellent advantage in dramatic roles, she is at her best in comedy-drama. When Mr. Griffith became director-in-chief for the Mutual Film Corporation, he engaged Miss Gish to appear in his big feature productions.
