©LANCHE SWEET is a native daughter of California and was born in San Francisco. She entered Berkeley University, but left and went to New York at the end of her second college year to take up a special course in art. While in New York she became interested in motion pictures and joined the Biograph Company, which was then under the direction of Mr. D. "W. Griffith. After remaining with the Biograph for several months she returned to Berkeley to complete her course in college. After graduation she returned to New York and rejoined the Biograph. The big feature films at this time were just beginning to come into existence and Miss Sweet was engaged to play the leading role in Mr. Griffith's feature productions. Her acting in "Judith" was conceded marvelous by the motion picture critics and stamped her as one of the leading emotional actress in film land. Upon leaving the Biograph to produce his own special big features and supervise the productions of the Reliance and Majestic Companies in the Mutual Film Corporation, Mr. Griffith engaged Miss Sweet for his feature pictures. In the role of May Joyce, daughter of the slums in "The Escape," Miss Sweet scored a notable success. She also displayed the wide scope of her powers in "Home, Sweet Home" and "The Avenging Conscience." One Hundred
