After service in the war, started in comedies with Lloyd Hamilton. In 1918 joined Chaplin as an actor with Mutual ; wth Triangle Comedies in 1919. His first directorial experience was in 192 1 with Lloyd Hamilton again. Later he worked with Mack Sennett and Universal, before gaining a contract with Warner. His outstanding work was The Singing Fool (Warner, 1929), with Al Jolson.
