An elder brother of the better known Cecil de Mille, William also spent his early life on the stage, following Cecil into motion pictures in 1914. During his career he has worked as producer and director for Paramount, Pathe and M.G.M.

Went to Hollywood in the first place to act in and direct German version films for First National. He had made Der Tauz Gcht Werter, Sinflut and Kismet before Hollywood recognized that he had real directional genius. Entered motion pictures in 1921, his first film being directed by E. A. Dupont. Since 1926, he has directed all the pictures in which he has appeared.

Screen debut in 1915 with the old Hepworth Company in The Man Who Stayed at Home. Has recently been directing for B.I. P., one of his productions being Brother Alfred, with Gene Gerrard and Molly Lament.
